Kidding Around the PETA Theater Center

CB Garrucho’s Tele-Aralan ng Kakayahan (at least the arts and crafts episodes) was to me then, what Art Attack probably is to kids now. Perhaps because I had developed an interest for making things early on, I was just enthralled by how the guests on Ms. Garrucho’s show tinkered with treasures from a place called Tabora (which I imagined to be every crafter’s paradise) and, moments later, produce from under the table something more magnificent than what they had at the beginning. I don’t remember which came first—having longer school hours (which prevented me from catching the show) or Tele-Aralan getting cancelled—but there came a point when I didn’t get to see the show anymore. And though I never lost interest in making things, growing up without Tele-Aralan also brought with it the realization that while Tabora is indeed a crafter’s paradise, it can also be one hell of a congested, foul-smelling street, and that without the magic of television, finished products don’t just pop out from under the table.

Through the kindness of Gibbs Cadiz and the folks at pinoycentric.com, however, I got to see CB Garrucho again, not on TV, but in person at the PETA Theater Center. As it turned out, she would be giving us lucky bloggers the tour of the premises, and, along with her “resource persons,” acquaint us with the craft of theater. Naturally, I was like a kid watching Tele-Aralan all over again, which was actually a good thing, because if I weren’t on “kid-mode”, the prospect of spending an afternoon singing, dancing and playing dress-up with a bunch of strangers would have scared the hell out of me. It still scared me a bit, but like the other bloggers, I just threw myself into the tour activities which had us learning a song, doing movement exercises, wearing weird costumes (I got a bonnet with dreadlocks), and forming tableaus in a couple of different venues in the theater center, after which, they had us showcase everything we learned on the actual PETA stage. True, it wasn’t the kind of tour I was expecting, but it turned out to be more interesting and actually more fun. More than anything, those activities reminded me about what I always hear but often forget whenever I encounter the grown-up issues of stress, frustration and heartache (yes, heartache) involved in theater production—that theater is all about play. It is supposed to be fun.

Nowhere was this spirit of play more evident than in, well, the play that we got to see after the tour (but of course!). Christine Bellen’s Batang Rizal, PETA’s initial offering for its 40th season, is a brilliantly-staged, highly-entertaining re-imagining of our national hero as a child (and human being in general) as seen through the eyes of a time-traveling elementary school kid (whew, that’s a lot of hyphens!). I had seen something with a similar concept before (a vignette in Dulaang Sibol’s Centennial production, Duyan ng Giting), but I quickly forgot about it and instead found myself laughing at the numerous antics of the (mostly) young cast, tearing up at the more touching mother-son moments, and even getting goose bumps when the giant pad paper screen (?) was first raised to signify the shift in time period and when the young Rizal first found out that he was going to be killed. But what is great about the play is that aside from the entertainment value, it also imparts valuable lessons to the audience, especially on the topics of nationalism and heroism. Personally, I think one of those lessons is that, like in a play, doing something good for our country is mainly just a matter of doing our parts the best way we can. That sure beats anything I ever learned from Tele-Aralan! After that experience, if ever I would be made to choose between an afternoon of watching Tele-Aralan (or any other TV show for that matter) and an afternoon in the theater, I would gladly choose the latter. And I hope that by posting this entry, I would have done my part in convincing even just a few others to do the same.

Well, at least I think so. hehehe. Abangan niyo para ma-confeerm!

the Star Movies Star Wars 30th Anniversary Marathon!

O diba! Bangag na nga siguro ako. Yebah!

at dahil bangag na rin lang ako... allow me to gloat:

Your Vocabulary Score: A+

Congratulations on your multifarious vocabulary!
You must be quite an erudite person.

How's Your Vocabulary?

What is a Blue Moon?
There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days). May 2007 had two full moons: the first on May 2, the second on May 31—that second full moon was called the blue moon.
Note that the May 31 date applies to most of the Western Hemisphere, including the United States. In the Eastern Hemisphere, the full moon in question occured on June 1. For that half of the world, the blue moon will be on June 30, 2007.

Ayun naman pala.

------------------------------

Hmm....

Is this going to be a good year?

Do What You Have To Do-Sarah McLachlan (Leche naman eh. "I know I can’t be with you / I do what I have to do / And I have sense to recognize but / I don’t know how to let you go...")

12.) What's your love life like?

Right in Front of Your Eyes-OST The Wedding Singer the musical (Ows? Talaga? Asan?)

13.)
"...and Tuesday nights at Eddie Condon's with Wild Bill Davison playing that trumpet of his..."--Kikay in New Yorker in Tondo

So paano sila napanood ni Kikay?

Labo. Anyway, it's just me.

-------

Speaking of that staging, nalalabuan na talaga ako sa set...at ako (mainly) ang nag-design nun. Hay. Hahahaha. Woohoo!

-------

-------

Still, today was quite nice.

------

Go Martin!

Well, noong finally nakabili na ako ng kopya last December, sobra akong na-hook.

Ang pamagat ay The Marvelous Adventures of the Amazing Dr. Rizal.

Tanghalang Pilipino 21st Season Line-up

Ang pinakanakakaintriga: ORO PLATA MATA, THE MUSICAL. Shet! Anyway, matatagpuan ang mas detalyadong line-up after the cut.

Experience a very potent year with Tanghalang Pilipino as it presents its 21st Theater Season (2007-2008) about power and politics. The exciting line-up of plays speak about how individuals and individual relationships are affected by these two factors.

Opening the season is the new production of the landmark sarswela set in the period prior to the national elections in 1907. PILIPINAS CIRCA 1907 is about political conflict and family relations getting in the way of two pairs of star-crossed lovers when America was more in the heart. This production caters to all ages and persuasions, but more specifically for music theater enthusiasts and students of Philippine history, literature, political science and humanities. With libretto by Nicanor Tiongson, music by Lutgardo Labad, Louie Pascasio, Chino Toledo, et al, and to be directed by Dennis Marasigan, the sarswela runs at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino from August 10 to September 2, 2007.

From September 14 to October 7, 2007, at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, children and young people of all ages will be treated to spectacle and innovative staging. MULAN, a new musical which tells of wars fought not just by men but between the gods, fuses martial arts and traditions. Award-winning playwright Rody Vera writes the script based on the original story, with music by Jude Edgard Balsamo and direction by Dennis Marasigan.

What are heroes made of? What ghosts do they have to face? What sacrifices do they make? Do we even remember who they are and what they had to endure? EJ, a new play on Edgar Jopson and Evelio Javier, lays bare the battles the two modern-day heroes had to face as their lives are re-imagined for our generation. Written by Ed Maranan with direction by Chris Millado, this production is a worthy choice for those interested in recent Philippine history as well as for elementary and high school students needing examples of Filipino nobility and heroism. At the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute from November 16 to December 10, 2007.

KUDETA is a wickedly funny play about a coup that topples the country's President and how he fights back with all the weapons he has in his disposal - his enemies' uncanny ability to self-destruct, and descendants who come out of nowhere. Is this the Philippines? Mustapha Matura's play ensures delightful viewing for all, specially theater enthusiasts, students of social sciences and history, and cause-oriented groups and organizations, plus those in the military establishment and government. With translation by George De Jesus III and direction by Floy Quintos, the production runs at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute From January 11 to February 3, 2008.

For a climactic season ender, Peque Gallaga's "operatic" film set in Negros is transformed into a poignant and unforgettable musical production. ORO PLATA MATA, THE MUSICAL tells the story of how boys become men amidst the turbulent years of the Pacific War. Peque Gallaga himself directs this adaptation of his masterpiece which will surely capture theater, music and film enthusiasts alike, as well as the general public, including young professionals, members of socio-civic and corporate foundations and community organizations. With libretto by Chris Millado and Dwight Gaston, the production runs from February 8 to March 10, 2008 at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.

I only wish we got marks for it.

Irwin: Has a boy ever made you unhappy?
Hector: They used to do. See it as an inoculation, rather. Briefly painful, but providing you with immunity for however long it takes. Given the occasional booster--another face, another reminder of the pain--it can last you...half a lifetime.

I'm wild again, beguiled again
A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Couldn't sleep and wouldn't sleep
When love came and told me, I shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Lost my heart, but what of it
He is cold I agree
He can laugh, but I love it
Although the laugh's on me

I'll sing to him, each spring to him
And worship the trousers that cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

SOMETHING WONDERFUL

This is a man who thinks with his heart,
His heart is not always wise.
This is a man who stumbles and falls,
But this is a man who tries.
This is a man you'll forgive and forgive,
And help protect, as long as you live...

He will not always say
What you would have him say,
But now and then he'll say
Something wonderful.
The thoughtless things he'll do,
Will hurt and worry you
Then all at once, he'll do
Something wonderful.

He has a thousand dreams
That won't come true,
You know that he believes in them
And that's enough for you.

You'll always go along,
Defend him when he's wrong
And tell him, when he's strong
He is wonderful
He'll always need your love
And so he'll get your love-
A man who needs your love
Can be wonderful.
